How Does Surge Protection Work?

Power surges are unpredictable, and are due by several phenomena such as supply faults by service suppliers, faulty appliances, storms and many more. With electrical systems becoming even more complicated, a tiny power surge can cause major problems in those systems leading to irreparable damage.

One of the most frequent causes of power surges you will find: repeated consequences of the power flow, and lightning strikes and other similar events which send an electrical impulse back in the circuit. Although most people tend to blame power surges on lightning, thunderstorms are only responsible for a measly 2 percent of surges. Apparently, over 50% of these surges are triggered by large voltage equipment and compressors. These spikes happen many times per day, if ever appliances or devices powered by motors start up or closed down, diverting energy from and into the computer system. How can surge protectors do the job?

The live wire or primary power line in a surge protector contains an extra linked connection that feeds into an earth wire. A ground wire’s purpose would be to direct any additional current safely to the floor. The surge connection from the protector remains inactive until a bigger than normal voltage appears. This extra current is then safely diverted through the excess earth wire, directly into the floor. This prevents more current than ordinary from flowing to your appliances effectively making sure that they are protected from any injury that can be caused by power surges.
